Merck and IDEAYA face Oct. 10 FDA decisions while Johnson & Johnson earnings test pipeline momentum

Merck and IDEAYA are both lined up for Oct. 10 FDA decisions, with Merck’s setup complicated by the recent withdrawal of an ADC filing and IDEAYA’s framed by investor focus on the small-cell lung cancer ADC landscape. Johnson & Johnson follows with Oct. 13 earnings, where recent psoriasis updates and forecast revisions sharpen attention on pipeline durability and commercial trajectory.

Overview

The setup is unusually concentrated: two Oct. 10 FDA decisions put MRK and IDYA at the center of the calendar, and JNJ follows with earnings on Oct. 13 as investors weigh whether recent pipeline updates are strong enough to shape the next leg of the story. One featured event also extends beyond the target-week end, which makes the handoff from binary regulatory catalysts to large-cap reporting especially important for how sentiment and positioning may evolve.

MRK’s PDUFA is set for 2026-10-10, or in 6 days, but the immediate backdrop is complicated by the recent withdrawal of the ifinatamab deruxtecan application after the FDA said the package lacked the data needed for accelerated approval in a lung cancer population. That makes this catalyst harder to read as a simple approval setup, because the most concrete recent discussion around the name has centered on regulatory friction in an ADC program rather than a clean pre-decision ramp. At the same time, the broader MRK narrative is not solely defensive: one monitored post highlighted placebo-adjusted HiSCR75 data for tulisokibart, and recent coverage described Merck’s antibody data in chronic skin disease as “highly competitive,” while another BioSpace item said BMO is among the most bullish on Merck’s plans to manage its patent-cliff exposure. The practical takeaway is that the Oct. 10 event arrives with both regulatory scar tissue and evidence that investors are still looking for pipeline offsets elsewhere in the portfolio.

IDYA also has a PDUFA on 2026-10-10, or in 6 days, and the most relevant monitored discussion frames the event through competitive implications in the ADC landscape rather than through a large body of company-specific operating updates. One watchlist post explicitly flagged IDYA’s FDA decision as part of a Q4 catalyst slate that could shift the investment case, while two bullish posts argued that the unexpected I-DXd BLA withdrawal was a positive for DLL3 ADC competitors and said the withdrawal leaves more room in the SCLC ADC landscape. That matters because IDYA’s setup appears to be benefiting, at least in the monitored corpus, from a relative-positioning argument: if a rival program stumbles on evidentiary standards, investors may assign more strategic value to alternative approaches in the same disease space. For this catalyst, the key stake is whether the Oct. 10 decision reinforces that competitive opening or shows that the bar remains difficult across the category.

JNJ reports earnings on 2026-10-13, or in 9 days, and the monitored tally is bullish 4, bearish 0, neutral 1, driven mainly by recent psoriasis-focused updates around icotrokinra. The bullish case in the monitored posts is straightforward: contributors pointed to two-year durability data, argued the late-breaker should strengthen readthrough across oral and injectable psoriasis markets, and noted a BofA forecast increase to $4.5 billion from $2.4 billion on higher expected peak share. The lone neutral note is also useful into earnings because it cautions that quarterly forecast precision is limited when reported scripts capture only 25%–30% of the volume JNJ sees internally, a reminder that near-term commercial reads may be noisier than the headline enthusiasm suggests. So the earnings event is less about a single binary outcome than about whether management can translate favorable clinical durability and rising external forecasts into a more concrete commercial framework investors can underwrite.

Op-ed

MRK looks like the wrong kind of binary into its Oct. 10 PDUFA

The case against leaning into MRK here is straightforward: the company heads into its 2026-10-10 PDUFA in 6 days with a setup clouded by a very recent ADC filing withdrawal, while the more constructive signals around the name sit outside the actual catalyst at hand. That does not make MRK broken as a franchise, but it does make this specific decision date look less attractive than a simple “big pharma into catalyst” framing would suggest.

The most important substrate point is the one investors cannot ignore: Daiichi and Merck withdrew an ADC filing after the FDA said they lacked the data for accelerated approval in a lung cancer population, a development captured both in sector reporting and in the monitored post stream around MRK. A separate post explicitly groups the MRK/DSNKY withdrawal with other pulled U.S. oncology filings and frames the comparison as analytically meaningful, reinforcing that this was not treated as routine paperwork noise. Even if that withdrawal is not the same asset as the pending PDUFA, it still matters for how the market should discount regulatory confidence around MRK’s near-term oncology execution, especially when the event itself is close enough that positioning can easily bleed across programs.

The defense of a cautious stance is stronger because the bullish items in the substrate point to MRK’s broader pipeline quality, not necessarily to a clean readthrough for this week’s binary. One monitored post highlights placebo-adjusted HiSCR75 of 24-27% for top doses of tulisokibart at 16 weeks, with treatment-arm HiSCR75 of 40-41% versus placebo at 15%. BioSpace also described Merck’s antibody data in chronic skin disease as “highly competitive,” and another BioSpace item said BMO was the most bullish on Merck’s plans to contend with patent cliffs. Those are real positives for the company’s medium-term narrative. But that is exactly why they should be separated from the trading question in front of investors now: a strong platform story and encouraging non-PDUFA data do not erase the signal sent by a fresh FDA-linked withdrawal elsewhere in the portfolio.

A fair counter-argument is that MRK’s breadth is the point: one setback in an ADC filing does not define a company that continues to generate competitive immunology data and is still viewed constructively by at least some Street observers on post-LOE planning. That is true as far as it goes. But for a catalyst brief, the issue is not whether MRK is investable in the abstract; it is whether this is the setup to press. On that narrower question, nearby cross-currents matter. In fact, one reason the MRK withdrawal is consequential is that it appears to have improved the perceived opportunity for another featured name, with monitored posts on IDYA explicitly calling the I-DXd BLA withdrawal a positive for DLL3 ADC competitors and saying it leaves leeway in the SCLC ADC landscape. When a company’s own regulatory retrenchment is being read through as upside for adjacent players, that is usually not the backdrop for a high-conviction long into a deadline.

There is also a useful contrast with JNJ, whose upcoming earnings in 9 days are supported by a pre-computed KOL tally of 4 bullish, 0 bearish, and 1 neutral, alongside posts emphasizing durability and raised forecasts for icotrokinra. That does not make JNJ “better” in every respect, but it underscores the central point on MRK: some catalyst setups are helped by aligned narrative momentum, while MRK’s is complicated by a recent, concrete regulatory stumble that the market is still processing. My position, then, is not that MRK lacks long-term assets; it is that this PDUFA arrives with enough portfolio-level regulatory overhang that caution is the more disciplined stance.
